CLASSICAL SOURCES · CALENDAR METHOD

Traditional timing, examined through transmitted sources

Guanyitang uses the imperially commissioned Xie Ji Bian Fang Shu as a primary reference for traditional timing rules and consults commonly transmitted almanac material such as the Yu Xia Ji. Stem-branch cycles, Day Officers, lunar mansions, solar terms, and hour periods are calculated by a deterministic calendar engine. Public calendar facts and personal chart interpretation remain clearly separated so a general activity marker is not mistaken for a personal verdict.

COMMON QUESTIONS · TIMING PRINCIPLES

How to read an almanac and weigh a date

What if the public almanac calls a date auspicious but it clashes with my birth chart?

Traditional date selection begins with the day's general calendar pattern, then considers the activity and the individual chart. A publicly auspicious date is not automatically favorable for every person or purpose. If the day's stem-branch forms a material clash with the natal chart, personal circumstances and practical constraints should take priority, with the daily chart reading used as an additional reference.

What are the Twelve Day Officers? Do Break and Danger days mean everything should be avoided?

The Twelve Day Officers cycle from the relationship between the seasonal month and the day's earthly branch. They describe how different activities fit the day. A Break day can suit removal or dismantling, while a Danger day is not universally unusable. The activity, day deity, lunar mansion, and hour all need to be read together.

What should I do when an auspicious date and the hour's luck appear to conflict?

The day establishes the broad background; the two-hour period refines the usable window. First avoid a day-level restriction that directly conflicts with the activity, then choose among the available auspicious hours. If the date itself is materially unsuitable, a single favorable hour should not be treated as a complete override.

Why can solar-term transitions and hour boundaries differ across time zones on the same date?

A solar term occurs at a specific astronomical instant. Once converted into different time zones, its local date and transition time can differ. The public almanac uses the page's market time zone, while a personal birth chart separately applies birthplace, birth-time zone, and any true-solar-time correction selected for the recorded birth time.
