Wenchang Guiren
Summary
Wenchang Guiren is a traditional BaZi marker symbolizing learning, comprehension, expression and documentary skill. It gathers the processes of taking in knowledge, organizing material, forming an account and communicating it clearly into one recognizable theme.

What the name Wenchang Guiren refers to
Wenchang was the name of a traditional Chinese asterism long associated with education, literary attainment and official records. Fate-calculation traditions borrowed that cultural image to name a day-stem and branch relationship, while Guiren added expectations of recognized ability and access to a useful channel for expression.
Charts commonly shorten the term to Wenchang. Its literary scope extends beyond creative writing: explanation, rule comprehension, technical documentation, records, structured speech and professional study all fit the underlying image.
What Wenchang Guiren primarily describes
Wenchang Guiren primarily describes how knowledge is absorbed, organized and communicated. It treats learning, comprehension, expression and document handling as one complete process and asks how strongly that process shapes the chart's themes.
| Wenchang theme | Experience described | Present-day settings |
|---|---|---|
| Learning | Grasping key points and building structure | Courses, training and continuing education |
| Comprehension | Turning complex material into usable understanding | Research, analysis and technical work |
| Expression | Conveying an idea through speech, text or a work | Writing, teaching, design and communication |
| Documents | Working with records, rules and formal material | Contracts, proposals, archives and credentials |
Classical texts connect literary markers with examination honors and official writing, reflecting the learned career path of their period. A present-day reading can cover the wider range of work that depends on accurate information processing and clear communication.
How a Wenchang Guiren match is usually interpreted
When Wenchang Guiren is present, inspect how learning and expression enter the person's life. One person may excel at turning scattered material into a coherent structure; another may find a role through explanation, writing or professional communication; another may develop the theme only through sustained practice.
Useful questions include: how does the person approach unfamiliar knowledge, how are complex details classified, which medium carries an idea most clearly, and how often do formal documents or rule-bound tasks shape the work? The matched pillar and the rest of the chart provide the setting.
Several matches record the same day-stem rule in several branch positions. Read each placement in its own pillar context; achievement develops through study, opportunity, feedback and repeated work.
How BaZi Wenchang relates to Zi Wei Wenchang
BaZi Wenchang Guiren and the Wenchang star of Zi Wei Dou Shu share educational, literary and expressive imagery. Their calculation routes and interpretive units remain distinct because each belongs to a different chart system.
| Point of comparison | BaZi Wenchang Guiren | Zi Wei Wenchang star |
|---|---|---|
| System | Four Pillars BaZi | Zi Wei Dou Shu |
| Calculation entry | Day stem | Zi Wei star-placement rules |
| Placement unit | A Four-Pillars branch | One of the twelve palaces |
| Reading context | Stems, branches, Ten Gods and pillars | Palaces, major stars, transformations and aspects |
The same person can therefore receive different Wenchang placements in the two systems. Identify the chart system first, then follow its own calculation and interpretive grammar.
How Wenchang Guiren is calculated
The Wenchang lookup uses the day stem as its key. Find the stem in the table, take its single corresponding branch, and scan the year, month, day and hour branches. Every occurrence of the target branch creates a match in that pillar.
| Day stem | Branch | Day stem | Branch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jia | Si | Ji | You |
| Yi | Wu | Geng | Hai |
| Bing | Shen | Xin | Zi |
| Ding | You | Ren | Yin |
| Wu | Shen | Gui | Mao |
A worked lookup
Suppose the day stem is Geng and the four branches are Chen, Hai, Wu and Shen. Geng maps to Hai, and Hai occurs in the month pillar, so Wenchang is marked there. The result establishes the Geng–Hai correspondence; interpretation follows from the month pillar and complete chart.
Why classical Wenchang tables can differ
Classical Wenchang tables can differ because closely related names—including Wenchang Gui, Wenyu Gui and Wenxing Gui—circulated with separate formulas. Later manuals and contemporary charting practice standardized the Jia–Si, Yi–Wu table used on this page.
Guanyitang currently follows the common table found in sources such as Qian Li Ming Gao. The San Ming Tong Hui table headed Wenchang Gui gives Jia–Si, Yi–Hai, Bing–Xu, Ding–Chen, Wu–Shen, Ji–Wu, Geng–Yin, Xin–Wei, Ren–Mao and Gui–Chou; that book then prints another Wenxing Gui formula. Each table has its own name, mnemonic and correspondences and should be used as a complete set.
When two calculators disagree, compare both the formula table and the reference stem. Stating which table an entry uses provides a clearer answer than merging every literary-star mnemonic into one lookup.
FAQ
- What does Wenchang Guiren mean?
- Wenchang Guiren is a learning-class BaZi Shensha associated with studying, understanding, organizing information, language and documentary work. Charts often shorten the name to Wenchang.
- How do I find Wenchang Guiren?
- Use the day stem to obtain one branch from the Wenchang table, then scan the year, month, day and hour branches for that branch. A Jia day, for example, looks for Si.
- Is BaZi Wenchang the same as the Wenchang star in Zi Wei Dou Shu?
- They share literary and educational imagery but belong to different systems. BaZi uses a day-stem-to-branch table; Zi Wei Dou Shu places its Wenchang star through that system's star-placement rules.
- Does a Wenchang match guarantee examination success?
- Examination results also depend on knowledge, training, health and circumstances. Wenchang highlights a learning-and-expression theme; it cannot be converted into a score, degree or credential.
- Why do some classical Wenchang tables differ?
- Names such as Wenchang Gui and Wenxing Gui referred to several literary-star formulas across different books. This entry uses the Jia–Si, Yi–Wu table common in modern BaZi and records the older San Ming Tong Hui variant separately.
