Lushen

lù shén · Learning and office

Summary

Lushen is a traditional position marker formed by each stem's official phase and associated with standing and resource-bearing capacity. It carries older imagery of rank and stipend into questions of how a person establishes a position, shoulders responsibility and turns available conditions into a stable basis for life.

Where the name lu comes from

In imperial institutions, lu referred first to official stipend, rank-supported sustenance and the benefits attached to a role. The San Ming Tong Hui opens its discussion by defining lu as rank and stipend enjoyed when a stem has gained an effective position.

Within BaZi, the term retained its historical association with office and support while expanding into a structural language for standing, usable resources and the ability to carry action. Lushen is also called the lu of the ten stems.

What Lushen primarily describes

Lushen primarily describes how a person occupies a sustainable position, carries resources and fulfills the responsibilities attached to those conditions. The classical idea of gaining position before enjoying its support joins standing and use in one image.

StandingFinding a role that supports sustained workCareer position and professional direction
CapacityCarrying responsibility and resourcesProjects, offices and long commitments
SustenanceEstablishing a stable source of supportIncome, benefits and institutional backing
UseTurning available conditions into lived valueTime, tools, platforms and relationships

Modern resources come through many routes beyond imperial office. The central question is how the person establishes a position, carries its responsibilities and makes use of available conditions.

How a Lushen match is usually interpreted

When Lushen is present, inspect where the person can develop stable investment and self-support. One person establishes standing through specialist skill, another through institutional continuity, and another must first create workable boundaries and rhythm before existing opportunities become sustainable.

The matched pillar links the lu position to a life context. Its stem, Ten God, month command, combinations and clashes describe where resources come from and how they are used. Repeated matches place the same lu branch in more than one context and should be read separately.

Position can also bring obligation, inertia or dependence on stability. The San Ming Tong Hui subdivides lu by strength and disruption after establishing the table, showing that every occurrence requires further evaluation of its condition.

Why Lushen corresponds to the official phase

Lushen corresponds to the official phase because the twelve growth stages use that phase for elemental qi developed enough to take office and carry affairs. Lu likewise centers on gaining position, accepting responsibility and receiving its support.

Wood stems take the eastern branches Yin and Mao, fire stems the southern Si and Wu, metal stems the western Shen and You, and water stems the northern Hai and Zi. Earth traditionally lodges with fire, giving Wu the Si position and Ji the Wu position. The four storage branches are excluded because their qi is mixed rather than exclusive.

How Lushen is calculated

The Lushen lookup uses the day stem as its key. Find the stem's single lu branch and scan the year, month, day and hour branches. Lushen is marked in every pillar where that branch occurs.

A worked lookup

Suppose the day stem is Yi and the four branches are Hai, Mao, You and Wei. Yi's lu is Mao, and Mao occurs in the month pillar, so Lushen is marked there. Because the lu branch is also the month branch, the structure additionally enters a Jianlu discussion.

Bing and Wu both use Si, while Ding and Ji both use Wu, because the two earth stems lodge with fire in this scheme. Those repeated rows are part of the traditional table.

How Lushen, Jianlu and the Wealth star differ

Lushen, Jianlu and the Wealth star can all participate in a discussion of resources. Lushen names the day stem's official-phase branch in any pillar; Jianlu is the special case in which that lu occupies the month branch; Wealth is a Ten-God relationship produced by the element the day master controls.

ConceptHow it is formedQuestion it addresses
LushenDay stem's official-phase branch appearsWhere standing and resource capacity appear
JianluThe lu branch is the month branchHow the day master gains position in the month command
Wealth starElement controlled by the day masterHow resource objects and management relations form

A month-branch lu can therefore be marked as Lushen and studied further as Jianlu, while Wealth follows a separate Ten-God calculation. Keeping those levels distinct returns each resource theme to its own chart structure.

FAQ

What does Lushen mean?
Lushen is the traditional lu position formed where each stem reaches its official growth phase. Older texts use stipend and rank imagery; present-day reading can examine standing, resources, responsibility and self-support.
How do I find Lushen?
Use the day stem and scan all four branches: Jia–Yin, Yi–Mao, Bing and Wu–Si, Ding and Ji–Wu, Geng–Shen, Xin–You, Ren–Hai and Gui–Zi.
Does Lushen indicate a high income?
Lu traditionally includes sustenance and resources attached to a position. Actual income depends on industry, ability, opportunity and financial structure; the marker cannot specify salary or wealth.
How does Lushen differ from Jianlu?
Lushen is the day stem's official-phase branch wherever it appears. When that branch is specifically the month branch, BaZi commonly calls the structure Jianlu and reads it through the month command.
Is Lushen the same as a Wealth star?
Lushen comes from the day stem's official phase. Wealth comes from the element controlled by the day master and its yin-yang relation. Both can concern resources, but their formulas and analytical levels differ.
