Reading your chart: every section explained
Main stars & hidden stems
The main stars are the Ten Gods (十神 shí shén): with the Day Master as the reference point, they name how every other stem and branch relates to you — Direct Officer, Seven Killings, Direct and Indirect Wealth, Eating God, Hurting Officer, Direct and Indirect Resource, Friend and Rob Wealth — mapping to career, wealth, expression, learning and peers. Hidden stems (藏干 cáng gān) are the heavenly stems concealed inside each branch: a branch can hide up to three, and the secondary ones often rewrite the chart’s real balance of power — which is exactly why “just counting the eight characters” gets charts wrong.
Life stages, self-sitting & Void
Life stages (十二长生) track the Day Master through the twelve-stage growth cycle — Birth, Bath, Peak, Tomb, Extinction and so on — across the four pillars, showing how its qi rises and falls over four layers of time. Self-sitting reads each pillar’s own stem against its own branch, gauging how stable that pillar is in itself. Void (空亡 kōng wáng) marks the two branches left empty in the current decade; tradition holds that a pillar falling into Void is weakened, discounting both its blessings and its harms.
NaYin & symbolic stars
NaYin (纳音) groups the sixty JiaZi into thirty pairs, each summed up by a physical image that captures a pillar’s overall temperament — for example, RenZi and GuiChou correspond to Mulberry Wood, while JiaZi and YiChou correspond to Gold in the Sea. Symbolic stars (神煞 shén shà) are auspicious and inauspicious markers scattered across the pillars: the Tian Yi noble star signals help from others, Yang Ren fierce intensity, the Post Horse movement and relocation — each with its own lookup method and classical source, and each tagged to its pillar in the chart.
Major, annual & minor luck
Major luck cycles (大运) advance in ten-year steps, derived forwards or backwards from the month pillar, setting the broad climate of each stage of life. Annual luck (流年) changes year by year, interacting with both the luck cycle and the natal chart. The childhood years before the first cycle are covered by minor luck (小运). The traditional order of reading: major cycle first, then the year — the natal chart is the body, the cycles its application.
True solar time & the equation of time
Clock time is an administrative convention; the sun’s true position shifts continuously with longitude. Our true solar time correction accounts for both factors: the longitude offset (about 4 minutes per degree from your zone’s central meridian) and the equation of time (an astronomical swing of roughly ±15 minutes across the year). When a birth falls near the boundary between two hour periods, those dozen-odd minutes are enough to change the hour pillar — and with it the whole chart.

Before you begin, get these straight
What birth details does a BaZi chart need?
The calendar type, birth date, two-hour period and sex. With true solar time correction enabled, you also pick a birth city or enter longitude and time zone.
I don’t know my birth minute — can I still cast a chart?
Yes. BaZi works in two-hour periods, so this tool never asks for minutes. If your birth time sits near the boundary between two periods, check your birth record or cast both versions and compare.
When is true solar time correction worth using?
When your birthplace lies far from your time zone’s standard meridian, daylight saving was in effect, or your birth time falls near a period boundary — that’s when the correction matters most.
Is a missing element always a bad thing?
Not necessarily. Absence among the visible stems and branches doesn’t count the hidden stems, month-command strength or the chart’s overall dynamics. Whether an element helps or harms can never be judged by count alone.
