Summary

Friend (Bi Jian) shares the Day Master’s phase and polarity. The Day Master is the stem of the birth day: another Jia beside a Jia Day Master is Friend because both are yang Wood. Traditional BaZi draws on this likeness to discuss peers, siblings and mutual assistance, as well as the division of resources among peers.

What Friend represents

Friend begins with support from one's own kind. Two Jia stems share phase and polarity; traditional BaZi uses this likeness to discuss peers, siblings and mutual assistance. Zi Ping Zhen Quan likewise explains its sibling association through their shared nature.1, 2

Sharing a task offers an analogy for Friend’s assistance. When the Day Master lacks strength, capable peers may provide support. Traditional writing calls this supporting the self; the self here means the Day Master, and support means assistance from the same phase.

Peers also control the same phase. Jia Wood controls Earth, which is called Wealth in its Ten God relationships; another Jia controls Earth too. Friend can therefore support the Day Master while also participating in its Wealth. With strong Wood and slight Earth, more Wood may exert excessive control, called Friend dividing Wealth.1

Finding Friend and identifying the Day Master’s own position

For Jia, another Jia shares both Wood and yang polarity and is Friend. Yi shares Wood but has the opposite polarity and is Rob Wealth. For an Yi Day Master, another Yi is Friend and Jia is Rob Wealth.

A chart labels the day stem “Day Master” to identify the reference position. An identical stem elsewhere is named Friend relative to it. Day Master identifies a role and position; Friend identifies another stem's relationship to it. The labels do not represent conflicting rules.

A branch’s contained stems are its hidden stems, which can include Friend. Hai contains Ren and Jia: Ren Water generates Jia and is Indirect Resource, while the other Jia shares yang Wood and is Friend. A stem’s foothold among same-phase hidden stems is called a root. Such rooting and assistance from another exposed stem provide different kinds of support.

When Friend can provide support

For Friend to help, the Day Master must need support and the peer must be able to provide it. If Jia is weak and Earth Wealth heavy, another Jia can strengthen Wood’s capacity to bear Earth. This is Friend helping the Day Master bear Wealth: having the capacity to handle that relationship.1

Peers can also assist Wood facing strong Metal control. This differs from Resource generating Wood: Water Resource supports through generation from another phase, whereas Friend adds the same phase. Both can help, but they interact differently with the other phases.

The added Friend must itself be able to act. A Jia with no root and under heavy control cannot be counted as strong support merely because it appears. Zi Ping Zhen Quan distinguishes peer assistance among exposed stems from roots in the branches and emphasizes the importance of rooting.3

Why Friend can divide Wealth

For Jia, Wu and Ji Earth are Wealth. Both the Day Master and another Jia can control Earth. With strong Wood and weak Earth, more peers can increase the control borne by Wealth. This underlies the discussion of Friend dividing Wealth.1

Two opposing starting points make the difference clear:

Starting conditionWhat to examine when Friend is added
Weak Jia and heavy Earth WealthWhether the peer can support the Day Master enough to bear Wealth
Strong Jia and slight Earth WealthWhether peers over-control Wealth and create a dividing effect

Neither “a helpful friend” nor “a friend competing for money” follows automatically from one Friend stem. The initial analysis concerns Wood and Earth's relative strengths. Applying that symbolism to a real relationship requires additional human context; the name alone cannot establish cooperation or betrayal.

Restraint and productive release when Friend is excessive

With strong Wood and slight Earth, Metal and Fire have different roles. Metal controlling Jia belongs to Officer or Killings and can restrain excessive Wood. Fire generated by Jia is Output; it can also generate Earth, carrying Wood’s energy onward to Wealth. One path restrains Wood, while the other uses Fire to generate Earth.1

For Jia, Xin Direct Officer controlling Jia exemplifies restraint of Friend. Bing Eating God receiving Wood's energy and generating Wu Earth exemplifies the Output path. If Wood was already weak, either path may add unwanted control or expenditure. The reason for reducing Wood must therefore be established first.

The different bases of Friend, Rob Wealth and Jian Lu

Friend and Rob Wealth both share the Day Master's phase. Friend shares polarity, while Rob Wealth has the opposite polarity. Either can assist or divide Wealth; their names do not assign cooperation to one and theft to the other.

Jian Lu, Establishing Prosperity, depends on the Day Master and the birth month. Each stem has a traditional prosperity branch; Jia’s is Yin. Jia born in Yin month therefore brings Jian Lu into consideration. Yin contains Jia Friend, but having Friend and having the prosperity branch as the birth month are different conditions. Another Jia among the exposed stems does not by itself establish this pattern.1

FAQ

Do many Friend stems mean many friends?
Peers are a symbolic association, not a count of actual social contacts. Friend stems in different positions may have different strengths and uses. Their number does not measure friends or siblings.
Are Resource and Friend interchangeable because both support the Day Master?
No. For Jia, Water Resource generates Wood, while Jia Friend adds the same phase. Water also controls Fire, whereas Wood controls Earth. They may both support the Day Master while affecting Output and Wealth differently.
