Wall Earth (bì shàng tǔ) is the NaYin of GengZi and XinChou, taking its image from winter earth mixed into plaster and raised as a wall. A wall divides inner space from outer space while sheltering the household; its central themes are boundaries, protection and the order maintained within an enclosure.
The classical imagery
On the earth of GengZi and XinChou, the San Ming Tong Hui says:
“The qi dwells shut and sealed, and things are still wrapped away — screening form and sheltering body, inside and outside do not meet: hence it is called Wall Earth.”
"Things are still wrapped away" — winter's earth is less a builder than a keeper: the embers, the stored grain, and the dignity behind the wall all depend on this layer of earthen plaster to stand between them and the world outside.
