Desk tools · Eight Mansions baseline

Find your life gua and read the eight directions of your home

A home is set by its people, and people are settled by their home. Eight Mansions derives a personal gua from the birth year, assigns it to the East or West group, and reads how the eight directions serve you. Where the bed head points and which way the desk faces both begin with this one number.

births before Lichun count as the previous year · Lichun (Start of Spring) 1990 fell on February 4; August 15 is after it, so the year 1990 is used.
Quick table · 1950–2030

Eighty-one years of male and female Kua

Look up the Kua straight from the birth year. The year turns at Lichun (Start of Spring): births on or after Lichun use that year, births before it use the previous year. Every row is computed by this site's engine with the same rules as the calculator above.

The number and colour in each Kua name come from the nine Luo Shu stars (One White, Two Black, Three Jade, Four Green, Six White, Seven Red, Eight White, Nine Purple). A result of 5 has no gua: males take Kun and females take Gen, as marked.

Gua codex · One by one

The four lucky and four unlucky directions of each life gua

Each gua's directions come from the fixed Eight Mansions table and never change with the year. Directions are read from the centre of the home; the notes are the school's traditional imagery for deciding how to use a space, not verdicts on a life.

Nine Purple LiLi · Fire
Nature · East Group

Nine Purple Li: the fire trigram, due south, East group. Fire is fed by wood and fears water.

Four lucky directions

  • Sheng QiBestEast · Zhen

Thunder and fire kindle: a career catches, talent shines. Best for the main door or study.

  • Tian YiVery goodSoutheast · Xun

Wind fans fire: a light body and welcome guests. Best for the master bed.

  • Yan NianGoodNorth · Kan

Water and fire in balance: mutual respect and lasting affection. Best for the couple's room.

  • Fu WeiSteadySouth · Li

Light within: clarity and rest. Best for a desk or quiet room.

Four unlucky directions

  • Jue MingWorstNorthwest · Qian

Metal and fire clash: exhaustion. Avoid for bedroom and door; use for a bathroom.

  • Wu GuiVery badWest · Dui

Fire melts metal: losses and quarrels. Use for the kitchen.

  • Liu ShaBadSouthwest · Kun

Fierce fire scorches earth: stagnation. Use for corridors or storage.

  • Huo HaiMildly badNortheast · Gen

Fire and earth dim: delay and drag. Use for a utility room.

The Kua sets the baseline of a space; only the BaZi chart shows the useful god of a life. Even a lucky direction needs the day master's own balance to make sense.

The modern home · Four spaces

Bringing the Kua to the bedroom, desk, kitchen and door

The classics describe courtyard houses; we live in apartment towers. Below, Eight Mansions is translated into the four spaces people ask about most, as traditional guidance and practical steps, not as verdicts.

Bedroom · Where the bed head points

Head to a lucky direction, feet to an unlucky one; Tian Yi and Yan Nian first, Sheng Qi for ambition, Fu Wei for rest.
  • A bed is judged by the direction the crown of the head points when lying down, never by the feet.
  • Those chasing a career may point the head to Sheng Qi; light sleepers, the frail, those trying to conceive and elders traditionally take Tian Yi or Yan Nian.
  • Keep the head away from Jue Ming and Wu Gui, backed by a solid wall, and not facing the bedroom or bathroom door.

Study and workstation · Which way you face

Sit in a lucky sector, face Sheng Qi; a solid wall behind, open space ahead.
  • A desk or workstation is judged by the direction your face points when seated.
  • Students and those seeking promotion face Sheng Qi; work that needs quiet depth faces Fu Wei.
  • If the seat can only face an unlucky sector, angle the desk slightly so the line of sight avoids Jue Ming and Liu Sha.

Kitchen stove · Sit on the bad, face the good

The stove body presses an unlucky sector; the controls face a lucky one.
  • Eight Mansions does not chase luck everywhere; it uses the bad to control the bad. The stove itself sits on Jue Ming, Wu Gui, Liu Sha or Huo Hai.
  • The side with the burner controls faces Sheng Qi or Yan Nian, so the cook works towards good qi.
  • Avoid a kitchen at the exact centre of the home, and avoid a stove facing the bathroom door.

Apartment towers · Door versus daylight

The inner door takes the flow of people; the window wall takes the light of heaven and earth.
  • In a courtyard house the front gate was the facing; in a tower the entrance door often sits in an enclosed lift lobby, and the living-room window wall is the real opening for light and air.
  • Daily movement is read from the entrance door, ideally in a lucky sector of your gua.
  • Light and view are read from the largest window wall; keep that main opening bright and open. Serve both, and do not force them onto one direction.
Real conflicts · Working through them

The four questions that cause the most arguments

One of us is East group, the other West group. Whose direction does the bed follow?

This is the classic modern deadlock: a bed head facing east helps one partner and harms the other. The modern reading of Eight Mansions applies three rules in order:

  1. Health first: the bed head favours whichever partner sleeps lighter, is frailer, carries more stress or does more of the childbearing and care.
  2. Divide the space: the entrance door and the main living seat take the main earner's lucky sector; the bed head takes the other partner's; each desk faces its owner's own lucky sector.
  3. Harmony above all: Eight Mansions is about accord. A couple bickering daily over ten degrees of bed angle does the home far more harm than any so-called unlucky sector.
Does living in the Jue Ming or Wu Gui sector really bring disaster?

Nothing happens because of a name. Jue Ming and Wu Gui are labels the old masters chose for easy memorisation; they mark sectors the school considers poorly lit, poorly ventilated or unsuited to long stays, not a sentence on a person. The traditional remedy is to give those sectors to bathrooms, storage, closets and service shafts, low-use spaces that absorb the roughness. With good light, fresh air and no clutter, any sector is fine to live in.

I rent a studio where the bed is right inside the door and I cannot change anything. Can Eight Mansions still help?

Yes. The Yijing says every thing is its own taiji: a building, a studio, a bed, a desk are each an independent eight-trigram model. If the flat's door cannot change, treat your own bed or desk as a small taiji: use the phone compass to find your gua's Sheng Qi or Yan Nian sector, point the bed head or your seat towards it, and keep the lamp and desktop bright and tidy. That completes a local layout.

Why does another site give me a Kua a whole gua away?

Three things to check:

  1. The year boundary: some tools split years on 1 January or Lunar New Year. Eight Mansions follows Lichun, so anyone born before it gets a different answer elsewhere.
  2. The rule for 5: the common tradition sends males to Kun (2) and females to Gen (8); a few schools send both to Kun, changing some female results. This site follows the common tradition.
  3. Formulas after 2000: from 2000 the male base moves from 10 to 9 and the female base from 5 to 6; systems still using the old form get every post-2000 birth wrong.
The classical method · Sources

Why the year turns at Lichun and why the formula changed in 2000

The year begins at Lichun

Stem-branch years follow the twenty-four solar terms, not the first day of the lunar year. The moment the sun reaches 315° of longitude, Lichun begins, the year pillar turns, and so does the Eight Mansions birth year. Even a birth on the last day of the twelfth lunar month counts as the previous year if Lichun has not arrived; this tool decides from the birth date and that year's Lichun.

Why the formula changed in 2000

The Kua steps through the nine Luo Shu numbers one year at a time; adding up the digits is only a shortcut. Years from 1900 to 1999 begin with 19, and 1 + 9 = 10; years from 2000 begin with 20, and 2 + 0 = 2, which is 8 less and therefore one step forward in the cycle of nine. So the male base moves from 10 to 9 and the female base from 5 to 6. Each formula is correct within its own century; only mixing them goes wrong.

1900–1999: male = 10 − S, female = 5 + S · From 2000: male = 9 − S, female = 6 + SS is the birth year's digits added repeatedly down to a single digit. Results fold into 1–9; a 5 becomes Kun (2) for males and Gen (8) for females.

The Kua sets the space; the chart shows the useful god

Directions are the baseline of a home, but the day master and its element balance are the thread of a life. Take the birth year you have just found, add month, day and hour, and cast the full BaZi chart.

Your birth date and gender are carried across to the BaZi calculator so nothing needs retyping. If you have not found your Kua yet, this returns you to the form above.
